IAB FASHION AND BEAUTY REVIEW FOR 2022

As the year is coming to a close we have to take a look back at all of the fashion and beauty trends and moments and mishaps that carried us through 2022!

FASHION AND MAKEUP TRENDS

Barbicore: The upcoming 2023 Barbie film (starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie) caused an explosion of pink in the fashion world in line with the Barbicore trend.

Celebrities from Lizzo to Kim Kardashian were chanelling their inner pretty in pink, from the red carpet to fashion ads including Priyanka Chopra, Mindy Kaling, Megan Thee Stallion and Kim Kardashian.

Gothcore: On the heels of the pink resurgence comes the dark and mysterious look brought to the forefront by the Netflix series 'Wednesday' starring Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christine Ricci, Luis Guzman and Gwendolyn Christie.

Ortega has been been stunning us with her marvelously monochromatic looks, a trend that we believe will continue into 2023.

Blond eyebrows have more fun!: Bleached eyebrows were all the rage with many celebs following suit. Willow Smith, Kim Kardashian, Julia Fox and Kendall Jenner all joined in on the trend, giving us the blonde brow treatment.

BIGGEST FASHION MOMENTS OF 2022

Beyonce's Renaissance Return: The return of Queen Bey! The release of Beyonce's album 'Renaissance' (Act I of a 3 part album) had the Beyhive (and the world) in a frenzy! While full visuals have not yet been released we were able to get a sneak peak and they were iconic!

Her Renaissance listening party followed the dance trend and the celebrity guestlist did not disappoint including Janelle Monae and Donald Glover.

Bella Hadid: was named the fashion model of the year for good reason. She has been ruling the runway, walking in countless shows for all of the luxury houses including Versace, Balenciaga, and Mugler. Her it moment was at the show where a dress was painted directly on her at the  Spring Summer 2023 Coperni show!

Muva Rihanna: Rihanna has always slayed and didn't let her pregnancy stop her. She broke through the social norms of fashion friendly wear for those with a baby bump. It was business as usual for RiRi in 2022.

2022 Met Gala: The theme this year was 'gilded glamour' in reference to the Gilded Age in New York, an era of oozing, over-the-top extravagance during the economic boom of the mid 1800s.

Alessandro Michele and Jared Leto were twinning in matching Gucci suits, it was hard to tell who was who!

Blake Lively wowed with a convertible satin gown by Versace.

Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe's dress from a red carpet appearance in 1962. The commitment was so real Kim said she had to lose 40 pounds to fit into the dress and died her hair blonde to match Marilyn's iconic look.

BATTLE OF THE CELEBRITY BRANDS

Following the monumental success of Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, we've seen a wave of celebrities getting into the beauty industry and this year was no different.

Selena Gomez launched Rare Beauty in September 2022, a collection of makeup and skincare products with the purpose of "breaking down unrealistic standards of perfection. This is makeup made to feel good in, without hiding what makes you unique".

Marsai Martin also threw her hat in the ring with a nail line of reusable press-on nails that you can mix and match according to your own style.

Winnie Harlow launched a sun care line as well, catering to consumers of all skin tones and conditions.

SCANDALS OF THE YEAR

Yeezy X Adidas X The Gap X Balenciaga: What started off as the holy grail of collaborations soon fizzled out by the end of year. Throughout Kanye West's  most outspoken moments there still remained a cohesiveness between the brands to push out new collections as planned.  Unfortunately, continued strains between the brands became too great for the partnerships to continue.

First was the fallout with The Gap due to what Kanye cited as lack of control over projects as promised. Before the breakdown a Yeezy Gap collection, engineered by Balenciaga, was released including the including the Yeezy Gap Dove Hoodie.

While the remaining brands persevered it was Kanye's anti-semitic comments that proved to be the proverbial straw breaking the camel's back of the partnerships.

First, Balenciaga dropped the artist in condemnation of his comments. Adidas soon followed suit after a 9 year working relationship.

With Kanye's breakdown with Adidas, the sports footwear company is now left with over $500 million in Yeezy designed shoes with plans to sell them under it's own name

We'll see if 2023 can mend some broken fences for future collaborations.

Ads Gone Awry - Balenciaga and Benetton: After trying to distance itself from Kanye's drama Balenciaga was embroiled in its own scandal when sexually inappropriate ads were released combining children and bondage paraphernalia. The fashion house made a statement effectively blaming the production company and commencing litigation. After continued backlash for lack of accountability Balenciaga and Demna released their respective statements apologizing for its oversight in their approval process. The lawsuit was also swiftly retracted.

Benetton was the next fashion brand to be called out for their ads featuring children in underwear. The ads have since been since removed amid public outcry at their irresponsibility in the midst of Balenciaga's debacle.

PEOPLE WE'VE LOST

We also experienced some loss this year as the fashion world must continue without some of it's most prominent figures including Thierry MuglerAndre Leon Talley and Vivienne Westwood
